WHAT IS A NANOPLASTIC?

A nanoplastic is an extremely small piece of plastic (such as a byproduct of an industrial process or a fragment from the degradation of a larger plastic object), especially when occurring as an environmental pollutant. Nanoparticles, due to their extremely small size, are measured in billionths of a meter. For perspective, a particle is less than one-seventieth of the width of a strand of human hair.

The recommended amount of water for an adult is 84.5 ounces; therefore, one who drinks this much bottled water is ingesting about 600,000 nanoplastics every single day. Cumulatively, we’re talking almost 22 million nanoparticles in a year’s time. Astounding!

NANOPLASTICS: A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD

One of the authors of the study, Dr. Phoebe Stapleton, stated that “once inside the cells, [the nanoparticles] could release the compounds, leading to additional health issues.”

An article published by Columbia Mailman School of Public health stated:

“Nanoplastics are so tiny that, unlike microplastics, they can pass through the intestines and lungs directly into the bloodstream and travel from there to organs including the heart and brain. They can invade individual cells, and cross through the placenta to the bodies of unborn babies."

The said research also mentioned that ingested plastic could linger for an uncertain length of time, given its non-biodegradable composition. Therefore, this could result in adverse long-term health issues.
